Hiring the Wrong SEO Expert: 9 Costly Mistakes Pakistani Businesses Make

Hiring an SEO expert in Pakistan? The 9 mistakes businesses make - from price-only decisions to guaranteed rankings - and what each one actually costs you.

I have cleaned up after bad SEO engagements more times than I can count. The pattern is always the same: a business owner chose fast and cheap, the rankings did not move (or moved and then crashed), and by the time they called me, they had paid twice – once for the bad work, and again to undo it.

Here are the nine mistakes I see Pakistani businesses make when hiring an SEO expert, what each one costs, and how to avoid all of them.

Mistake 1: Choosing on price alone

The cheapest quote wins the WhatsApp group – and loses the year. A PKR 15,000-a-month “SEO package” cannot buy real work; it buys automation, spun content, and template reports. The true cost is not the fee you paid. It is the twelve months your domain spent going nowhere while competitors built real authority.

What it costs: a year of zero growth, plus the price of starting over properly. Read my SEO cost guide to see what real work actually costs in Pakistan.

Mistake 2: Believing guaranteed rankings

“First page in 30 days, guaranteed.” Google controls rankings – nobody else does. A guarantee like this means one of three things: the person is lying to close you, they are targeting keywords nobody searches, or they plan to buy the ranking with spam that will collapse the moment Google catches it (and Google always catches it eventually).

What it costs: a Google penalty – manual action or algorithmic suppression – that can take longer and cost more to recover from than building rankings properly in the first place.

Mistake 3: Hiring without an audit first

Would you let a doctor operate without a diagnosis? An SEO expert who quotes a six-month programme without auditing your site is selling a package, not solving your problem. Maybe your site needs technical fixes. Maybe it needs content. Maybe it needs links. Maybe it needs all three. Without an audit, nobody knows – including the person quoting you.

What it costs: months of the wrong work on the wrong problem. A proper audit takes days and reveals whether you even need the programme being sold to you.

Mistake 4: Never checking their own website

This one is embarrassingly simple and almost nobody does it. Search for the expert’s own site. Is it optimised? Does it rank for anything? Does it look like it was built this decade? An SEO expert whose own website is invisible in Google is like a dentist with rotten teeth – technically possible, practically disqualifying.

What it costs: nothing to check, everything to skip. Two minutes of due diligence that filters out a surprising number of candidates.

Mistake 5: Accepting “secret methods”

“We have proprietary techniques we can’t disclose.” No. SEO is not alchemy. Every legitimate technique – technical optimisation, content strategy, digital PR, outreach-based link building – can be explained in plain language. “Secret methods” is how black-hat practitioners describe link schemes, PBNs (private blog networks), and hacked links without saying the words.

What it costs: when Google’s spam policies catch the scheme – and they are updated constantly – your site pays the price, not the expert. They move on to the next client. You keep the penalty.

Mistake 6: No reporting you can verify

Monthly reports arrive as PDF screenshots of ranking charts. Pretty. Useless. If you cannot verify the numbers in your own Google Analytics 4 and Search Console, the report is marketing, not measurement. I have seen “traffic growth” reports that turned out to be bot traffic, referral spam, and once – memorably – traffic to a completely different website.

What it costs: you keep paying for success that does not exist, and you discover it months late, when the money is gone.

Mistake 7: Signing long lock-in contracts

Twelve months, binding, no exit clause, full fee payable even if you leave. Confident providers do not need hostages. The honest structure is an initial three-month commitment – SEO needs time to show direction – then month-to-month. If a provider demands a year of your money before producing a single result, they are monetising your hope, not their skill.

What it costs: a full year of fees for work you cannot escape, even when the monthly report is clearly fiction.

Mistake 8: Buying “1,000 backlinks for PKR 5,000”

Link packages sold by the thousand are spam by definition. Real links – editorial mentions, guest contributions, digital PR placements – are earned one at a time and cost real effort. A thousand links for the price of dinner means directory spam, comment spam, or PBN links, all of which Google’s spam policies explicitly target.

What it costs: a manual action in Search Console, rankings wiped out overnight, and a link-disavowal cleanup project that costs many times what the “package” did.

Mistake 9: Skipping references and proof of work

Nobody asks for references. Nobody asks to see a Search Console graph with the client’s name visible. Nobody asks “show me a site you grew and how long it took.” In a market where anyone can call themselves an expert, the businesses that get burned are almost always the ones who hired on confidence and a nice proposal deck.

What it costs: everything above, combined. Due diligence is free. Skipping it is the most expensive mistake on this list.

How to avoid all nine mistakes at once

The pattern behind every mistake here is the same: the business hired speed and confidence instead of evidence. Flip it:

  1. Get a paid audit before any retainer – it reveals how the provider thinks.
  2. Ask for one verifiable case study with real data.
  3. Check their own website’s SEO (two minutes, free).
  4. Demand a written contract with named deliverables and a 30-day exit – see my SEO contract guide.
  5. Compare their quote against real 2026 market pricing – if it is impossibly cheap, it is impossible.

If you are currently choosing between providers, my guide to choosing the best SEO expert in Pakistan walks through the vetting process step by step.

Frequently asked questions

What is the biggest mistake when hiring an SEO expert?

Choosing on price alone. The cheapest providers cannot afford the tools or the time real SEO requires, so they sell automation and spam. The lost year of growth costs far more than the fee you “saved.”

How do I know if an SEO expert is legitimate?

Three quick checks: their own website ranks and looks professional, they explain their methods in plain language (no “secret techniques”), and they offer verifiable reporting through your own Analytics and Search Console.

Can a bad SEO expert damage my website permanently?

Rarely permanently, but recovery is slow and expensive. Google penalties from spammy link building can take months to clean up through disavowal and reconsideration requests – far longer than building rankings properly would have taken.

Should I trust an SEO expert who guarantees first-page rankings?

No. Nobody controls Google’s rankings. Guarantees are either lies, rankings for keywords nobody searches, or short-term spam that will collapse. Honest experts commit to methods and measurable KPIs, not positions.

I already hired the wrong expert. What now?

Stop the bleeding first: revoke their access, document everything, and get an independent audit of what was done – especially the backlink profile. Then decide whether the damage needs disavowal and cleanup before any new campaign begins. My free SEO audit is a good starting point for that diagnosis.
